Laminations Creates Three Edge Protectors with Shielding Properties

New VBoard® coatings repel moisture, prevent abrasion, keep protective lubricants in place

APPLETON, Wis., April 20, 2006—Laminations®, part of Great Northern Corporation’s Specialty Group, has introduced three new innovative VBoard® products with special protective coatings designed to resist absorption of water, oil and grease and to prevent abrasions to finishes.

PetroShield™ has a unique coating that keeps oil and grease on the customer’s product by preventing their absorption into the edge protection. PetroShield’s coating is ideal for protecting metal machine parts and in other applications where oil or grease is used to prevent rusting or increase lubrication.

ScuffShield™ features a coating that protects products with delicate surfaces from abrasion that can occur in shipping and handling. ScuffShield is the perfect edge protector for painted or stained wood products such as furniture.

“We developed these three new products because customers told us they needed to protect their shipments from specific factors that can cause damage during transport, ” said Gary Hietpas, vice president, marketing & sales.  Laminations packaging engineers analyzed multiple application scenarios in careful detail to develop the most functional, cost-effective solutions to meet those needs.

“We sought to find the best approach for our customers to keep their costs low, while giving them a better functioning packaging solution,” said Keri Otremba, new product engineer for Laminations.

At the same time, the engineering team sought to develop solutions that could be manufactured with minimal environmental impact.

“As part of Laminations’ commitment to recycling, we seek to use recycled materials in production and to create products that are recyclable,” said Hietpas. “The coatings for these new products are repulpable—they can be recycled along with all other paper materials.”

HydroShield, PetroShield and ScuffShield are available in multiple calipers and leg lengths or can be custom produced for a specific application.

The new barrier solutions also can be applied to other Laminations product offerings. For example, customers can order PetroShield FlexBoard®, which is ideal for protecting steel rolls.
